Building Strong Walls: Why a Good Defence Is the Best Offence

Key Scripture: “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” — Proverbs 4:23 (NIV)
There’s a principle we know well in sport and warfare: the best offence is a good defence. But as believers, I’ve come to understand it differently. A good defence is our best offence. Before we can advance into our calling, we must first build strong walls. Not walls of fear or isolation, but walls of wisdom that protect the wellspring of our lives: the heart.
Guarding the Three Gates: Proverbs 4:23 doesn’t merely suggest we guard our hearts; it commands us to do so. “Above all else” makes this the top priority. Why? Because everything we do, every decision, every word, every step flows from this one sacred place. If the heart is compromised, everything downstream is too. So how do we guard it? By watching over three gates: our ears, our eyes, and our mouth.

Your Ears: Jesus gave a sobering instruction: “Take heed what you hear” (Mark 4:24). Every voice you allow into your ears plants a seed in your heart. Fear-filled headlines, gossip disguised as concern, and subtle lies packaged as truth slip in quietly and begin to erode your defences. A defended heart learns to tune out the noise and tune in to the Shepherd’s voice.
Your Eyes: Job recognised this battle and made a covenant with his eyes (Job 31:1). What we see shapes our desires more quickly than we realise. A guarded heart asks a hard but necessary question: Does what I’m watching draw me closer to holiness or dull my spiritual edge? Strong walls are built one righteous choice at a time.
Your Mouth: Jesus taught that the mouth speaks what the heart is full of (Luke 6:45). But the reverse is also true. What we say can reinforce the condition of our hearts. Words carry the power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21). When you refuse to partner with negativity, gossip, or self-defeating talk, you actively fortify your inner man. A closed mouth can be a mighty defence.
A Steadfast Mind and a True North
When these gates are guarded, something powerful happens within you. Your mind becomes steadfast; fixed not on shifting circumstances but on God’s unchanging character. Isaiah promised, “You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You” (Isaiah 26:3).
And from that place of peace, your confidence remains intact. You can assess the storms around you without panic, because you’re navigating by a fixed point—True North. God’s Word and His nature are your compass. While the world drifts on currents of compromise, you stand firm, knowing exactly who you are and whose you are.
The Offensive Power of a Defended Life
Here is the glorious paradox: when your walls are strong, you become a powerful offensive force for the Kingdom. From a guarded heart flows authentic love. From a steadfast mind flows bold truth. From a place of security, you advance without fear—leading others toward the same True North that guides you.
Build the walls. Guard the gates. Keep your heart. Then watch how God moves you forward.
A Prayer to Seal This Word: Father, I come before You and confess that I have often left the gates of my heart unguarded. Forgive me. Today, I choose to build strong walls in line with Your wisdom. Help me to be mindful of what I hear, what I see, and what I speak. Set a watch over my ears so that I may know Your voice above all others. Guard my eyes so that I may turn away from what dishonours You. Place Your hand upon my mouth so that my words carry only life. Make my mind steadfast and keep my confidence anchored in You alone. Be my True North—my unchanging reference point in an ever-shifting world. From this place of defence, lead me forward boldly. In Jesus’ mighty name, Amen.
