TO SERVE OR BE SERVED?

If I’m honest, there are days when I wake up wanting life to revolve around me. I want the easy seat, the quick answer, the people who notice me first. And then I remember Jesus.
He didn’t come demanding a throne. He came with a towel. “The Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)
That hits me because it flips everything I assume about being valuable. The world tells me I matter when I’m needed, when I’m admired, when I’m in control. But Jesus shows me I matter most when I lay those things down.
Serving doesn’t usually look holy. For me, it’s been choosing to listen when I’d rather talk.
It’s been apologizing first, even when I wasn’t fully wrong. It’s been staying 10 minutes longer to help my friend carry the load, knowing no one will see it. And some days it’s hard. My heart keeps score. But I’ve noticed that when I serve from the place of being loved by God first, it doesn’t empty me. It reminds me I’m free. I don’t have to earn my worth. I’ve already been seen, forgiven, held.
I’m learning that receiving is part of it too. Letting others serve me is humbling, but it keeps my hands open. The question isn’t “How can they serve me?” but “Lord, how can I reflect You today, even in small things?” Maybe that’s where you’re at too. Not on a stage, not making big declarations, just in the next ordinary moment. The text you didn’t feel like sending. The chore you do without being asked. The pride you let go of.
In God’s economy, greatness wears an apron. And somehow, when I stop grasping for honour, I find peace. “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant.” (Matthew 20:26)

Prayer: Jesus, thank You for serving me when I couldn’t serve myself. Teach my heart to look outward today. Soften my pride, quiet my need to be noticed, and give me eyes to see who needs a small act of love. Help me to serve out of the fullness of what You’ve already given me. Amen.
